Another palace in our city- Dhanraj Mahal, Colaba, Mumbai, India

 

With the property prices being what they are in Mumbai, I’m sure some of the most expensive homes in India today, are here.

But did you know, in the last century, one of the largest and costliest single residential building in Bombay was the beautiful Dhanraj Mahal in Colaba, near the famous Gateway of India by the Arabian Sea ?

The Dhunrajgirs of Hyderabad, were originally from Gandhar in North India. In the 19th century, they travelled to Hyderabad and soon became highly successful traders and esteemed bankers to the Nizams.

Aristocratic Philanthropist, Raja Dhunrajgirji Narsinghji married a famous yesteryear actress Zubeida Begum.
Their son, Humayun Dhunrajgir, still resides in a portion of the Dhanraj Mahal in Mumbai.

Another portion is rented out to Taj Hotels, as their back office since 1999.
During World War II, the Ministry Of Defence took it over, but gave it back to the family later.

This Grade III heritage structure was designed by Gregson,Batler and King but constructed by Shahpoorji Chandabhoy.
Early 20th century Parisian design style, this Art Deco building is built in a distinctive pink stone and has an imposing gateway.
Inside is a vast central courtyard around which are the residences.
These residential flats have the largest square footage of beautiful decorative mosaic Bharat tiles in the city !
